Frequently asked questions

When is the landlord’s PAN required?

Employers typically ask for the landlord’s PAN when the rent you pay is more than ₹1,00,000 a year. The tool asks for it above that amount. If your landlord has no PAN, your employer may accept a declaration instead.

Do rent receipts need a revenue stamp?

When rent is paid in cash and is above ₹5,000, receipts are usually signed across a revenue stamp. The tool adds a stamp box to such receipts. Payments by UPI or bank transfer usually don’t carry one.

Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?

Many people do, if they genuinely pay rent and the parent owns the house and reports the rent as income. Rules and scrutiny vary, so check with your employer or a tax adviser.

Which months should I generate?

Usually the financial year, April to March, or the months you want to submit to your employer. Up to 36 months can be made at once.

What else might my employer ask for?

Some employers also ask for a rent agreement or bank statements showing the payments. Check your company’s HRA proof guidelines.
