Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Markup is profit as a share of your cost; margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Buying at ₹80 and selling at ₹100 is a 25% markup but a 20% margin.

How do I set a price for a 30% margin?

Divide the cost by (1 − 0.30). A ₹100 item needs to sell for about ₹142.86. Adding 30% to the cost (₹130) would give only a 23% margin.

Why can’t the margin be 100% or more?

Margin is the part of the selling price that is profit. Even a free item would leave some cost, so margin stays below 100% however high the price goes. Markup has no such limit.

How do I work out the discount percentage from two prices?

Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. A ₹1,200 item sold for ₹900 is 25% off.

Should I calculate margin before or after GST?

Use prices without GST. The tax you collect goes to the government, so including it would make your margin look bigger than it really is. Our GST calculator can strip the tax out first.
